Press Release | Telework Timeline

The third annual CDW-G Telework Report compares the adoption of telework between the Federal government and the private sector. This approach provides the first side-by-side comparison of telework adoption and IT support in both markets.

The report shows that telework adoption continues to grow across in the Federal government and outpaces private-sector adoption by a three-to-one margin.

Forty-four percent of Federal employees indicate that they have the option to telework - up 6 percent from 2006 - while just 15 percent of private-sector employees have that option. During the past year, telework growth in the Federal government also outpaced the private sector: 35 percent of Federal teleworkers started teleworking, compared to 10 percent of private-sector teleworkers.

The report also reveals that Federal IT professionals continue to expand technical support for teleworkers. Forty-two percent of Federal IT professionals report that their agency started or expanded its telework program in the last year, and 62 percent of Federal agencies now have written IT policies for telework in place, compared to 46 percent in 2006. Support for private-sector teleworkers lags well behind, with just 25 percent of IT professionals indicating a new or expanded program in the last year. Moreover, just 40 percent of private-sector organizations currently have written telework policies in place.

Federal Government Leads Telework Adoption
  • More Federal employees are eligible to telework than their private-sector counterparts
  • Thirty-five percent of Federal teleworkers started in the last year, versus 10 percent of private-sector teleworkers

Federal Government Leads Telework IT Support
  • Nearly two-thirds of Federal IT professionals say their agencies have written IT policies in place, while less than half of private-sector IT professionals say their companies have written policies
  • Nearly a third of private-sector companies do not provide technical support for teleworkers

Teleworkers are Happier Workers
  • Eligible teleworkers are more satisfied with their current jobs
  • Eighty-nine percent of Federal employees and 89 percent of private-sector employees with the option to telework are either satisfied or very satisfied at work
What's Keeping Them Up at Night?
  • Security surrounding telework is a greater concern among private-sector IT professionals than Federal IT professionals
  • After security, productivity is the main concern for both sectors

CDW-G executed the research for the 2007 Telework Report in March 2007. The 2007 CDW-G Telework Report, based upon online, telephone and in-person interviews with 557 Federal employees; an online survey of 355 Federal IT professionals; a panel survey of 880 private-sector employees; and a panel survey of 405 private-sector IT professionals, is the first and only side-by-side comparison of telework adoption and IT support in both markets. The margin of error for the report is +/- 4.15 percent for Federal employees, +/- 5.19 percent for Federal IT professionals, +/- 3.3 percent for private-sector employees, and +/- 4.87 percent for private-sector IT professionals.
