Operation Homefront and CDW-G Present Computers to 100 Fort Bliss Military Families

Donated Computers Help Families Keep in Touch with Soldiers Deployed to Iraq

FORT Bliss, Texas - February 7, 2007 - Operation Homefront, in collaboration with CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), a wholly owned subsidiary of CDW Corporation and leading source of information technology (IT) solutions to governments, today presented 100 refurbished computers to the families of the U.S. Army 4th Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 1st Calvary Division; the 11th Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Brigade, and the Family Readiness Group (FRG) at Fort Bliss.

While many soldiers have access to e-mail while deployed at remote outposts, including sites throughout Iraq and Afghanistan, the situation is often different for their families back home. Troops rely on correspondence from family members during demanding deployments, but the families of many junior enlisted soldiers are often not able to afford computers and must rely on conventional mail or costly phone calls to stay in touch. Operation Homefront strives to support American soldiers deployed overseas by linking them more effectively with their families through e-mail communication using computers donated by sponsors such as CDW-G.

"Our soldiers and their families rely upon computer donations such as these to forge reliable, inexpensive communication links between loved ones at home and those on deployment," said Karla Ayala, Texas Chapter President for Operation Homefront. "Without access to a PC, the alternatives are either traditional postal mail or expensive telephone calls. Although it will never take the sacrifice out of a deployment, regular contact through the internet does provide a stable, dependable link home."

"This invaluable program organized by Operation Homefront is a way to keep our deployed servicemen close to their families while serving their country. Fort Bliss is pleased to be part of such a worthy cause," said Col. Robert T. Burns, garrison commander at Fort Bliss.

In addition to the computers donated directly to the families of the 4th BCT and 11th ADA, the Operation Homefront/CDW-G donation will also provide 10 PCs for use in an FRG computer lab accessible to enlisted families at Ft. Bliss. This arrangement will extend the value of the donation beyond the immediate recipients, providing access to both families and individuals who might not otherwise have access to electronic communications sent from abroad.

CDW-G worked with both Operation Homefront and Operation Homelink™ to donate the refurbuished PCs to the families at Fort Bliss. Working in cooperation, the organizations have delivered more than 4,800 PCs to military families. Corporations interested in donating end-of-cycle PCs should contact the Operation Homefront (www.operationhomefront.net) National Office. Individuals interested in donating used PCs should contact their local chapter of Operation Homefront. A list of chapters is available here: (www.operationhomefront.net/chapters.asp).

"With these computers, families at Fort Bliss will be able to bridge the gap created when a family member is deployed overseas. Rapid communication via e-mail will not only help families communicate on a regular basis, but also will make it possible to share digital photos and videos with the troops, providing a vital visual link to loved ones back home," said Andy Lausch, CDW-G director of federal sales.

About Operation Homefront
What is today Operation Homefront began in 2001 as a military spouse-generated idea. In response to the shortcoming of support for the families of deployed service members, CinCHouse.com members (military wives and women in uniform) created the project that has evolved into a major nonprofit charity serving 26 military communities in 25 states. Today CinCHouse.com operates as a program as part of the nonprofit Operation Homefront family. From a good idea, to a great organization, Operation Homefront understands and takes care of the needs of the military community.
