Operation Homefront and CDW-G Present Computers to 130 Soldiers and Families at Fort Campbell

Donated Computers Help Families Stay Connected During Deployment

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - May 16, 2007 - Operation Homefront, in collaboration with CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), a wholly owned subsidiary of CDW Corporation and leading source of information technology (IT) solutions to governments, today presented 130 refurbished computers to soldiers and families from the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell.

While many soldiers have access to e-mail while deployed at remote outposts, including sites throughout Iraq and Afghanistan, the situation is often different for their families back home. Troops rely on correspondence from family members during demanding deployments, but the families of many junior enlisted soldiers are often not able to afford computers and must rely on conventional mail or costly phone calls to stay in touch. Operation Homefront strives to support American soldiers deployed overseas by linking them more effectively with their families through e-mail communication using computers donated by sponsors such as CDW-G.

"Access to a computer and the internet is often the difference between daily contact with loved ones and weekly or monthly contact," said Amy Palmer, vice president of operations, Operation Homefront. "Without access to a PC, the alternatives are either traditional postal mail or expensive telephone calls. Although it will never take the sacrifice out of a deployment, regular contact through the internet does provide a stable, dependable connection to home."

"Information Technology has fundamentally changed how the Army conducts its mission and business operations. It is certainly fitting that technology also improves the support and care of the Army's most important elements – soldiers and families," said Col. Frederick W. Swope, garrison commander at Fort Campbell. "Even basic PCs make it easier for families to stay in touch. Rather than waiting weeks for a letter, families can communicate almost nightly and in many cases, instantly."

CDW-G worked with Operation Homefront to donate the refurbished PCs to the soldiers and families at Fort Campbell. Since its inception, Operation Homefront has delivered nearly 5,000 PCs to military families. Corporations interested in donating end-of-cycle PCs should contact the Operation Homefront (www.operationhomefront.net) National Office. Individuals interested in donating used PCs should contact their local chapter of Operation Homefront. A list of chapters is available here: www.operationhomefront.net/chapters.asp.

"Military families make an enormous sacrifice, working, raising children, and participating in community events without the presence of their loved ones who are serving the nation abroad. While a PC is no substitute to having your loved one at home, we hope that improved communication via e-mail will not only help families communicate on a regular basis, but will also restore a sense of connection for families that are often separated for extended periods of time," said Andy Lausch, CDW-G director of federal sales.

About Operation Homefront
What is today Operation Homefront began in 2001 as a military spouse-generated idea. In response to the shortcoming of support for the families of deployed service members, CinCHouse.com members (military wives and women in uniform) created the project that has evolved into a major nonprofit charity serving 26 military communities in 25 states. Today CinCHouse.com operates as a program as part of the nonprofit Operation Homefront family. From a good idea, to a great organization, Operation Homefront understands and takes care of the needs of the military community.
