High School Students Reveal Innovative Uses of Technology in the Classroom

CDW-G Names Winners of Its Second Annual Art & Essay Contest

Vernon Hills, Il - March 10, CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), a leading provider of brand name technology products and services to public sector and education institutions, today announced the winners of the 2003 CDW-G student art and essay contest. Megan McCray, a senior at Simsbury High School in Simsbury, Connecticut, took top honors for her essay and artwork titled "Challenge Reality." She wins a desktop computer outfitted with multimedia tools to help her continue her exploration of digital art. In addition, her school wins a $1000 CDW-G gift certificate.

In their entries, many students revealed that almost every aspect of their education has become modernized and intensified by technological applications in the classroom. Through the use of technology, more students are engaged in their studies, have enhanced opportunities to pursue their own interests and abilities, and graduate with experience to apply to their subsequent professional lives.

"During the past several years, the influence of technology in schools is playing a more important role in education and the lives of students," said Chris Rother, vice president of state, local and education sales at CDW-G. "These students have earned their schools the distinction of being among the most innovative users of technology in the classroom."

Nine other high school juniors and seniors from across the country were awarded a wide range of technology prizes including digital cameras, wireless equipment, publishing software and printers. The winning entries are:

First: Megan McCray: Simsbury High School, Simsbury, Connecticut
Second: Jennifer Fake: Pearland High School, Pearland, Texas

Seventh: Lateef Cannon: Episcopal Academy, Merion, Pennsylvania
Eighth: Samantha Zimmer: Pearland High School, Pearland, Texas

Tenth: Dan Hassenplug: Schaumburg High School, Schaumburg, Illinois

Honorable mention awards will be given to Pat Cathcart of Westwood High School in Ishpeming, Michigan and Alejandro Lopez of Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Florida.

"We're very excited for Megan," said Cindy Parsons, an art teacher at Simsbury High School. "She is a hard worker with a great eye, and we believe that she will excel in art or whatever career path she chooses."

For the contest, high school juniors and seniors created an original piece of digital artwork and wrote an accompanying 250-word essay answering the question "How do you use technology in the classroom?" 328 entries were submitted from September through December 2002. A panel of writers, business executives and graphic designers judged the entries on the basis of creativity, style, distinctiveness, use of space, color and medium and relevance to the topic.
