CDW-G Education Art Contest Recognizes Students' Creative Use of Technology
Vernon Hills, Ill. - April 21, 2004 - CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), the government and education subsidiary of CDW Corporation (Nasdaq: CDWC), today announced the winners of its third annual Education Art Contest, sponsored by Adobe®, in which high school students create an original piece of digital artwork and write a 250-word essay that addresses how technology enhances the learning experience. Entries are judged on creativity, style, distinctiveness, use of color, space and medium, as well as originality, grammar and content of the essay.
Nicole Kelly, a junior at Beall High School in Frostburg, Maryland, received this year's top honor. Combining technology and art, the yearly contest is designed to provide a unique learning experience for high school students and showcase their expressive skills.
Using a combination of digital photography and a PC outfitted with graphic design software, Kelly painstakingly created her colorful entry, "The Tree of Technology," that earned her first place from among 263 entries nationwide. "I really see technology as a tree that branches out, reaching out to everyone," said Kelly.
"These high school students are tomorrow's inventors, writers and designers, so we implemented a contest whereby they could express their wonderful creativity through technology," says Chris Rother, vice president for education at CDW-G. "The contest also lets CDW-G see how the next generation is using technology, something that enables us to adjust our own horizons. It is a wonderful learning experience for everyone."
When it came down to selecting the final winners, the judges -- from CDW-G's marketing department as well as a representative from Adobe -- were unanimous in their final selection.
"It's clear from the range and quality of submissions that creativity and professionalism are being explored and encouraged in the nation's high school art programs," said Tom Petrillo, Adobe's business development manager for creative professional sales. "These artists enjoy implementing the tools of their generation to express ideas regarding technology in an eloquent and exciting way."
As this year's first place winner, Kelly receives a notebook PC outfitted with Adobe Creative Suite software, a printer and a digital camera kit, among other prizes. Beall High School also receives a $1,000 gift certificate from CDW-G. Nine other high school students were awarded a wide variety of technology products from digital cameras to publishing software.
"The CDW-G contest gives kids an excellent outlet to display their creativity and skills," said Beall art teacher Susan Baker. "It's great because it helps expose students at our small, rural high school to the competitive side of the graphic design field. The skills required in this type of contest are important to students interested in careers such as advertising and Web design."
