Operation Homefront and CDW-G Present Computers to Soldiers and Families at Fort Carson

Donated Computers Help Families Stay Connected During Challenging Overseas Deployments

FORT CARSON, Colo. - April 21, 2009 - Operation Homefront, in collaboration with CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), a wholly owned subsidiary of CDW Corporation and leading source of information technology (IT) solutions to governments, today will present 130 desktop computers to soldiers and families from the U.S. Army's 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.

While many soldiers stationed overseas have access to e-mail, even in remote outposts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the situation is often different for their families back home. In today's uncertain economic climate, many families of junior enlisted soldiers are unable to afford computers and must instead rely on conventional mail or costly, infrequent phone calls to stay in touch. With the help of sponsors such as CDW-G, Operation Homefront is able to support American soldiers deployed overseas by linking them more effectively with their families through e-mail and other tools enabling near-instant communication.

"Much media attention is focused on the sacrifice of our military service men and women serving abroad, and appropriately so," said Brig. Gen. John Howard (Ret.), CDW-G Department of Defense (DoD) business development manager. "Through our continued partnership with Operation Homefront, we have been able to highlight the sacrifice of military families and help alleviate some of the loneliness they often feel when their family members are deployed. While e-mail can never replace the presence of a parent or spouse at home, we have been able to provide a vital connection to home, when family love and support is needed the most."

"Regular communication with family and loved ones is essential to the lives of our soldiers serving overseas," said Col. Randy George, commander, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. "Rapid communication via e-mail enabled by this generous donation will not only help families communicate on a regular, if not daily, basis, but will also make it possible for the families to share digital images and videos, providing our soldiers with a vital visual link to loved ones stateside. Although it will never take the sacrifice out of a deployment, regular electronic communication will improve the quality of life for our soldiers."

CDW-G worked with Operation Homefront to donate the PCs to the soldiers and families at Fort Bragg. Since its inception, Operation Homefront has delivered nearly 5,000 PCs to military families. Corporations interested in donating PCs should contact the Operation Homefront (www.operationhomefront.net) National Office. Individuals interested in donating PCs should contact their local chapter of Operation Homefront. A list of chapters is available here: www.operationhomefront.net/chapters.asp.

"Frequent contact with family members is vitally important to the well being of military personnel serving overseas," said Amy Palmer, chief operating officer for Operation Homefront. "Without the means to afford computers, many families of junior enlisted soldiers must wait weeks or even months for a letter - an untenable situation in the 21st century. However, with the help of CDW-G, more than 100 families of junior enlisted soldiers at Fort Carson can now communicate daily, and in many cases, instantly."
