High School Students' Depictions of Best Uses of Technology in the Classroom Earn Them Computers, Their Schools Grant Money from CDW-G

Vernon Hills, Ill. -- May 1, 2002 -- Ten high school juniors and seniors from across the country earned their school districts the distinction of being among the most innovative users of technology in the classroom.

Students from across the United States submitted essays and original artwork showing how technology has become an integral part of their classrooms. CDW Government Inc. (CDW-G), a leading provider of technology products and services for high schools, colleges and universities, sponsored the contest.

A senior from Astronaut High School near Cape Canaveral, Florida submitted the winning entry, earning a multimedia computer system for herself and $1000 for her school.

Networked computers throughout the school help students perform legislative research for their American Government class, collaborate on lab results in Chemistry, and experiment with digital versions of photos in Photography classes. "At each [chemistry] lab station sits a networked computer, and at the touch of a button we can easily receive data from every other group, find averages, and construct graphs," wrote the student in her essay.

Twenty years after the introduction of the first PC, the students' essays and artwork provide a snapshot of how the computer has progressed from a supplement to an integral tool in classroom curriculum.
"Technology unlocks new ways of teaching and learning," said Chris Rother, Executive Director, Government and Education, CDW-G. "This contest highlights the best examples of teachers using technology in their classrooms to give our children every possible advantage." Ten schools were recognized for their innovative use of technology in the classroom, including:
  • Astronaut High School, Titusville, FL
  • Morris Knools High School, Denville, NJ
  • Melvindale High School, Melvindale, MI
  • Mansfield Christian School, Mansfield, OH
  • Williamsville High School, Williamsville, IL
  • Mitchell High School, Mitchell, IN
  • Rogers High School, Garfield, AR
  • Granada Hills High School, Granada Hills, CA
  • Dubuque Senior High School, Dubuque, IA
  • Willits High School, Willits, CA
The contest asked high school juniors and seniors to create an original piece of artwork and write an accompanying 250-word essay answering the question "How do you use technology in your classroom?" Entries were gathered from September 2001 through February 2002. A panel of art directors, writers and business executives judged the entries based on creativity; style; distinctiveness; use of space, color and medium; and relevance to the topic
