EdTech: Focus on Higher Education Announces First Winners of its IT Leadership Awards

Arizona State University wins IT Pop Quiz Award; University of Illinois wins Best Business Case Award

Vernon Hills, Ill. - May 8, 2006 - EdTech: Focus on Higher Education today announced two winners of its first-annual IT Leadership Awards, which recognize the innovative use of technology on higher education campuses. Arizona State University and the University of Illinois will each receive a $2,000 technology shopping spree at www.CDWG.com. In addition, EdTech will feature the winners in the May-June issue distributed this week.

Arizona State University won the IT Pop Quiz award with an entry submitted by Robin Manke-Cassidy, technology support analyst and coordinator for the school's University Technology Office. Entrants were asked to provide a detailed solution for a specific campus laptop security and network authentication challenge posed by the editorial staff of EdTech: Focus on Higher Education. Manke-Cassidy's entry described her team's successful implementation of a network access control system on campus to minimize security incidents and free up IT staff time.

The University of Illinois won the Best Business Case award with an entry submitted by Margaret Krol, associate vice president (interim) for the school's Administrative Information Technology Services. This award sought entries that described successful business case justifications for capital technology expenditures. A panel of judges from Purdue University selected Krol's entry as the winner because it documented sound evaluation, measurement and implementation guidelines for the University of Illinois' massive initiative to replace legacy systems with an integrated solution encompassing student, financial aid, finance and human resources systems.

EdTech: Focus on Higher Education will feature the winners of the third award - Pedagogy and IT Practice - in the August-September issue. This award sought entries describing how higher education institutions are leveraging technology to improve instruction and student service

"Institutions of higher education are not recognized enough for the quality of IT programs that they regularly - and successfully - implement." said Lee Copeland, editor in chief, EdTech: Focus on Higher Education. "Arizona State University and the University of Illinois underscore the technology innovation taking place on campuses throughout the nation. We hope that other institutions and organizations will learn from these best practices, and we look forward to announcing the winners of our Pedagogy and IT Practice award in our next issue."
