South Dakota School Wins Grand Prize In The 2004 CDW-G And Discovery Education "Win a Wireless Lab" Sweepstakes

Vernon Hills, IL - June 22, 2004 - CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), and Discovery Education today announced that Colman-Egan School in Colman, South Dakota is the 2004 "Win a Wireless Lab" sweepstakes grand prize winner. The sweepstakes was part of a joint initiative between the two companies to help K-12 schools integrate technology into their curriculum.

K-12 teachers and technology coordinators from around the nation submitted more than 59,000 entries. The grand prize, an IBM wireless computer lab valued at $40,000, is a mobile cart with 20 notebook computers that enables teachers to easily transport the technology from one classroom to another. It comes with IBM Options and NETGEAR wireless products, on-site setup, and training from CDW-G and Discovery Education. A complete set of Discovery Education classroom curriculum products will also be presented.

In addition to the grand prize, CDW-G and Discovery Education will give away four levels of prizes to 40 schools, including HP projectors, HP Inkjet printers, networking products from D-Link, and a selection of curriculum materials from the Discovery Education library. As part of the initiative, CDW-G and Discovery Education produced a curriculum kit themed, "Keep it Safe: Security and Storage Solutions for Your Schools."

Designed for middle and high school students, the kit was mailed for free to 15,000 district technology specialists. It included posters, classroom activities, and lesson plans to teach students about secure passwords and procedures for protecting the network.

"Technology enhances student performance when used in conjunction with a solid curriculum," said Chris Rother, CDW-G's vice president of education. "We are glad to award the wireless computer lab to Colman-Egan School, a rural South Dakota K-12 school that can now make technology more available to its students."

"Technology literacy benefits students of all ages," said Paul Thomas, vice president of Discovery Education. "The students at Colman-Egan School will gain widespread access to curriculum resources on the Internet and through the Discovery Education K-12 library of educational videos, curriculum, and CDs."

"Our school technology committee wanted to purchase a wireless lab for our school but we did not have the resources. I am so excited about the possibilities of what we can now do for our teachers and students," said Gail Scriver, Colman-Egan's Library Assistant. "We have a combined K-12 school with approximately 300 students. With this prize we will be able to expand students' worlds far beyond South Dakota."

Colman-Egan recently consolidated its elementary, middle, and high schools into one building. Their school leaders understand the value of technology skills for their students and see that students are in the computer lab using computers every day. The school library currently has eight computers, and all classrooms have at least one computer, although some are quite old.

Scriver assists Colman-Egan staff with computer questions when tech assistance is not available, and helps staff locate Internet resources for their classroom projects. She also works with students on Internet research, creates school banners, and writes thank you notes for the school board. She leads international student education tours and hosts exchange students. This year, her students are planning an 11-day trip to Europe and Scandinavia. They meet regularly to plan their trip on the Internet; researching culture, maps, transportation and events.

Representatives from CDW-G and Discovery Education will meet with school officials and students early this fall to install the wireless lab and train them how to maximize their new technology.
