EdTech: Focus on Higher Education Announces Final Winners of its IT Leadership Awards
Purdue University, Babson College and Dyersburg State Community College Win Pedagogy and IT Practice Award
VERNON HILLS, Ill. - July 25, 2006 - EdTech: Focus on Higher Education today announced the final three winners of its first-annual IT Leadership Awards, which recognize the innovative use of technology on higher education campuses. Purdue University, Babson College and Dyersburg State Community College will each receive a $2,000 technology shopping spree at CDWG.com. In addition, EdTech will feature the winners in the August-September issue, published and distributed this week.
The Pedagogy and IT Practice award sought entries describing how higher education institutions are leveraging technology to improve instruction and student service. A panel of judges from Duke University selected one winner among contenders in each of three categories: private institutions, public institutions and community colleges.
Purdue University won the Pedagogy and IT Practice award in the public institution category with an entry submitted on behalf of John Campbell, associate vice president for the Department of IT Teaching and Learning Technologies. Purdue's entry described his Software Remote team's successful implementation of a solution that integrates Microsoft Terminal Services with a Citrix Presentation Server to grant 60,000 users - including students, faculty and administrators - with anytime, anywhere access to more than 30 educational applications. This program has allowed Purdue faculty members to reexamine their teaching approaches to increase the use of software, which in turn enhances the students' classroom experience by increasing their exposure to "real world" software tools.
Babson College won the Pedagogy and IT Practice award in the private institution category with an entry submitted by Stephen Laster, director for the college's Curriculum Innovation and Technology Group. Laster's entry outlined an initiative to make technology-based distance learning for its MBA Fast Track program students more interactive by integrating Blackboard, Elluminate and Adobe Breeze. The program provides faculty with a forum to draw out ideas, punctuate key points and facilitate high-quality case discussions typically only found in the traditional classroom environment in online classes.
Dyersburg State Community College won the Pedagogy and IT Practice award in the community college category with an entry submitted by Bob Phillips, dean of the college's Business and Technology department. The judges selected Phillips' entry as a winner because it outlined an innovative program in which the college developed a Web-based solution that automated examinations and credit processing for high school students seeking college credit or advanced placement. The credit articulation Web site allows students to access online tests, take practice exams and measure their skill levels, while educators can compare statewide competencies and identify opportunities to enhance student learning. The program has since been implemented at all 12 community colleges in the state of Tennessee.

"Institutions of higher education are not recognized enough for the quality of IT programs that they regularly - and successfully - implement," said Lee Copeland, editor in chief, EdTech: Focus on Higher Education. "Purdue University, Babson College and Dyersburg State Community College have each crafted educational programs that leverage technological innovation to enhance the learning experience.
